Frequently asked questions

What nimistu is, where the data comes from, whether it is free, and how it differs from other Estonian company-information sources.

How do I check an Estonian company?

Search by name, registration code or address on nimistu.ee. You see status, board, owners, beneficial owners, financials, tax data, public procurement, court cases and links to other companies - with the source shown next to every fact. Free, no account needed.

Is nimistu free?

Yes - completely free and ad-free, with no account and no paid tier. Unlike many Estonian business-information services, there is no paywall or premium upsell for better data.

Where does the data come from?

72+ official and open-data sources: the Business Register, Tax and Customs Board, public procurement register, court rulings, Official Notices, Land Register, building register, vehicle register, OpenSanctions, GLEIF, the EU Transparency Register and more. Every field shows its source and last refresh time.

How is nimistu different from Inforegister, Teatmik and the official e-Business Register?

The e-Business Register (ariregister.rik.ee) is the official state register and the primary source. nimistu is an open-data view on top of it: free and ad-free, aggregating 72+ sources on one page (not just one), publishing everything as open data under CC BY-SA, offering an open API and MCP, and run by a non-profit. We give companies no scores, ratings or "risk levels", and nobody can pay to change their record.

Does nimistu have an API or AI-tool support?

Yes. There is a JSON lookup API (nimistu.ee/api/lookup), an MCP server for AI tools (nimistu.ee/mcp), and any page is available as clean markdown by adding ".md" to its URL. AI crawlers are deliberately welcomed.

How fresh is the data?

Business Register changes appear within about 10 minutes, tax and procurement data refresh daily, land and building records weekly. Every field shows its own last-updated time.

Where does person data come from, and is showing it lawful?

Board members, owners and beneficial owners come from the public Business Register. We show only public register information, not private contact details. The legal basis is legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6) with an Article 14 notice; we display a person's date of birth, not their personal ID code.

Can I export and reuse the data?

Yes. The aggregated dataset is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 - journalists, researchers, NGOs and businesses may use and redistribute it, citing nimistu.ee as the source.

How do I report an error or request removal of my data?

You can report a data error on the contact page - we fix it within 48 hours, and for source-level errors we help you reach the register's keeper. To have personal data removed you can file a data request; see the privacy terms for details.

Who runs nimistu?

nimistu.ee is operated by Nimistu MTÜ - an Estonian non-profit association (registry code 80673204) founded specifically to maintain the platform in the public interest. No profit is distributed.
